Background of the study:

Healthcare financing is a critical element in ensuring the availability and quality of health services. In Nsukka Local Government Area, the challenges associated with financing healthcare have led to inadequate service provision and infrastructure deficits. Limited government budgets, inefficient resource allocation, and high out-of-pocket expenditures burden residents and impede access to necessary care (Nnadi, 2023). These financial constraints often force individuals to delay or forgo medical treatment, resulting in poorer health outcomes. Moreover, the reliance on donor funding and inconsistent health insurance coverage further complicates the sustainability of healthcare services (Chukwuemeka, 2024). Recent studies highlight the need for innovative financing mechanisms that can bridge the funding gap and ensure equitable access to healthcare (Okeke, 2025). This research investigates the multifaceted challenges of healthcare financing in Nsukka, analyzing the interplay between funding sources, policy implementation, and health service delivery. The findings will help to identify potential strategies for enhancing healthcare financing and improving service accessibility for the local population.

Statement of the problem:

In Nsukka Local Government Area, healthcare financing is plagued by limited government funds, high out-of-pocket costs, and inefficient resource management. These challenges undermine the quality and accessibility of healthcare services, leaving vulnerable populations at risk and necessitating a thorough investigation into financing issues (Uche, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

1. To evaluate the current healthcare financing mechanisms in Nsukka.

2. To identify key challenges affecting healthcare funding.

3. To propose sustainable financing solutions for improved service delivery.

Research questions:

1. What are the current healthcare financing models in Nsukka?

2. Which factors contribute most significantly to financing challenges?

3. What alternative financing strategies can enhance healthcare delivery?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Inadequate funding is significantly linked to poor healthcare service delivery.

2. High out-of-pocket expenses negatively impact healthcare access.

3. Innovative financing strategies will improve healthcare infrastructure and accessibility.

Significance of the study:

This study highlights the financial challenges in healthcare delivery and proposes actionable solutions to ensure sustainable funding, thereby improving service quality and access in Nsukka (Ibe, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:

This study is limited to assessing healthcare financing challenges within Nsukka Local Government Area, focusing solely on local funding mechanisms and resource allocation.

Definitions of terms:

1. Healthcare Financing: The method of funding health services and infrastructure.

2. Out-of-Pocket Expenditure: Direct payments made by individuals for health services.

3. Health Insurance: A mechanism to cover or subsidize the cost of medical care.
